new releases

from sixpoint brewery:

Sixpoint Brewery

We can all admit it — a Season Creep lurks among us. He calls, quietly at first, for his seasonals a bit earlier. A saison in January, summer wheat in April… it seems harmless at first brush. Blink twice and you’re standing on your buddy’s front porch, holding the pumpkin beer you just brought to his Fourth of July party.

Enter Global Warmer, an original Mad Scientists creation formulated in a garage laboratory. It has brazen, incandescent hop character, and enough rich red malt to warm you through any time of year. It doesn’t even matter how mixed up the seasons get — wear a scarf with short-shorts if you want, we don’t mind! — this is authentic beer crafted to highlight beer’s natural elements.

Global Warmer is part of Sixpoint Cycliquids, a beer series that lets us make the beer we want, when we want it. It’s hoppy, malty, and now in six-packs. Savor one and watch the Season Creep slink away.

But what does early 2015 hold for Sixpoint? The triumphant return of some hop gold, a BEAST ready to rear his head, and loads of new formulations beyond that. With the Mad Scientists and the Cycliquids series, you never know what comes next…

Introducing 4 new hand crafted tonics from the Phillips Fermentorium!

Tonic 4 Packs

4 different hand-crafted tonics in 1 box!

December 10th 2014 – We are very excited to announce the release of four brand new hand-crafted tonics! The second product to emerge from the Phillips Fermentorium, these tonics are made without any artificial flavours or liquid sugars.  Instead, real ingredients and time-honoured extraction techniques endow the tonics with full, natural flavours, and balance tart with the subtle sweetness of raw cane sugar.

T he mixed pack contains 4 different tonics, designed to celebrate different nuances in your pairings or cocktails. From classic tart, to floral, citrus, and sweet, there is a tonic to match whatever recipe you have up your sleeve.

Tonic 4 packs are available from private, craft focused retailers in BC and of course Phillips Brewing Co.  To get the rundown on each of the tonics included in the box please see below!

Artisanal Dry:
It’s a classic style tonic with a twist.  Orange peel, white grape juice, lime peel and quinine are lively carbonated balancing bright tartness with a hint of sweet.  The Artisanal Dry Tonic was crafted to highlight complexity of STUMP Coastal Forest Gin* , but will breathe life into whichever premium spirit companion you pair it with.

*STUMP Gin is available in select cocktail bars now, but stay tuned to January for broader release details…

Cucumber Mint:
During the crafting of this tonic, natural flavours are extracted by patiently steeping real cucumbers and mint in cold water.  Twist the cap, and cucumber aromatics dance from the bottle, leading to fresh cucumber flavours with a hint of mint, all wrapped in a body of soft sweetness that finishes slightly tart.

Philosopher’s Brew:
Philosopher’s Brew Tonic offers a sophisticated depth of flavor that’s refreshingly approachable.   Herbal flavours of lavender and rosehip blend with the citrus of lemongrass and orange peel.  Slightly sweetened with raw cane sugar.

Botanical Brew:
Pouring a delicate soft pink colour, the Botanical Brew Tonic is refreshingly floral and strikingly effervescent.  Rose petals, hibiscus flowers, heather flowers, damiana  and lavender are complimented by a subtle sweetness through the body that finishes dry.  Charge up your next cocktail with a little flower power.

green flash

new green flash and founders collaboration brew!

Green Flash has done it again! We have teamed up with another World Class Brewery, Founders Brewing Co. to produce a new collaboration, Linchpin IPA! Join the Green Flash team in the Tasting Room on Tuesday, May 1st for a special Release Party!

“There’s a lot going on in this beer with two yeast strains, copious amounts of wheat malt, and a big focus on ‘C’ hops to deliver a citrus explosion,” explains Green Flash Brewmaster, Chuck Silva. “In fact we lined up more than a dozen hop varieties in the brewery to select three hops with the biggest citrus character to dry hop the beer.

“This golden beer pours with beautiful, frothy white beer foam that lasts due to bottle conditioning. Gently rousing the yeast that settles in the bottle will result in a fuller texture and a more cloudy white appearance. The citrus aromas that jump from the glass are largely tangerine up front with other types of citrus notes that mingle with the Belgian yeast esters. Hop flavors of bitter orange zest dominate the brew and linger to the finish with a nice play of American and Belgian yeast combo.”

A beer with so many components can be held together with a “Linchpin”. The official “Linchpin” of this beer is the skillful collaboration between the two breweries to create a unique hop-forward brew. Linchpins are symbolic: two simple shapes that combine to strengthen a bond amongst many different pieces.

beernesday

too many beers i wanted to try at beernesday at st. augustine’s last night!
had to have me two samplers to fit them all in

look how well my iphone camera works when there is light

whistler brewing cheakamus chai maple ale – 5%  this dark bronze ale is made with real maple syrup, added right to the mash.  then, a trace of chai tea is added during the filtration process.  the result is a highly complex, mildly spicy palette structure
hoooo boy that is sweet!  it would be awesome in pancake batter or over ice cream
a bit too much maple sweetness for me in a beer though, the chai notes were subtle, but appreciable

chuckanut brewery pilsner – 5%  in 1842 a bavarian monk smuggled lager yeast from munich to the bohemian town of pilsn where they used the yeast with british pale malt, crafting a beer golden in color.  chuckanut pilsner is truly mouthwatering, deeply satisfying, and refreshing!
i do love me a pilsner, and this one did not disappoint
chuckanut is good at the german-style beers, yes indeed

tofino brewing tuff session ale – 5%  a bright copper coloured pale ale with toasty malt base balanced with wast coast hops.  its light to medium body and clean, dry finish gives this full-flavoured ale dangerously inviting drinkability
there’s a flavour in there that i don’t like
wish i could discern what it is, but i can’t, so there

green flash brewery double stout – 8.8%  an old-world style, done the green flash way
its very yummy, but what is that malt flavour?  its not chocolate or coffee or licorice or chicory…
whatever it is, i like it!  i like it a lot!

when there is no light, my iphone camera takes horribly dark photos!

coal harbour vienna lager – 5%  a vienna-style lager which uses substantial amounts of german malt and specialty malts and german hops
quite a nice little lager!

tree brewing hop head double ipa – 8.3%  packs in the hoppy bitterness with five different varieties of superior hops.  similar to its award-winning best-selling little brother, hop head ipa, also boasts citrus aromas and sweet malt undertones with a slightly darker copper colour
oh yes!  this is a lovely little number
hit all the right double ipa notes for me!

red truck sticke alt – 6.2%  darker in colour and higher abv than traditional alts.  it has a restrained fruit aroma and flavour, a light caramel and burnt sugar malt sweetness, and distinct, herbal, hop bitterness
i’m not a fan of the alt style, but this one i like
not too sweet, not too fruity, not too bitter… it worked for me!

crannog ales gael’s blood potato ale – 5.2%
a coppery red caramel malt lies beneath a forceful hop presence in both bitterness and aroma.  crannog’s spring season ale is made with mt. hood hops grown organically on their own farm
yum!  this year’s brew is lovely!  yes!
