A New IPA Straight from our Hop Devolpment Lab

September 15th 2014: Tucked away in a quiet corner of Phillips Brewing Co is a development lab dedicated to exploring the delicious world of hops. It’s a place where different hop combinations yield all sorts of unique IPA hybrid brews which are released in the Hop Box under the Area 52 series.

Octofox was one of the early specimens to come out of the Area 52 program, and it was so good we’ve opted to put it out in its own bomber!  It pours a deep golden colour with a soft marshmallow white head.  Full bodied and bright, flavours of citrus are balanced against a pine-bitter hop profile that finishes dry. Octofox is selectively brewed to be broadly enjoyed.

Octofox is available from your favourite Cold Beer & Wine Stores now, and BC Liquor stores later this week.

13 Years, 13 Knots, 1 Special Gift

September 2nd, 2014: Over the past number years we’ve made a habit of celebrating our anniversary the best way we know how: by exploring the full breadth of our hop addiction and creating some of the biggest IPA’s we could.  To celebrate our 13th Anniversary we’ve crafted another monster IPA called 13 Knots in a Hangman’s Noose, and hung a very special gift around its neck…

Hop Drop is an artisanal hop liqueur crafted to celebrate the hop flavours that we covet in our beer.  We distilled real hops into an incredibly potent hop elixir, where explosions of fresh pine and bright bitterness are balanced in a blanket of soft sweetness.  Its depth of flavour is robust enough to enjoy on its own poured gently over ice, or it can be ‘dropped’ into another beer to instantly raise the ABV and infuse bright a hoppy flavour.  If added to 13 Knots, it raises the 11.9% ABV to—you guessed it—13%!

To get your hands on this limited Anniversary beer—with the Hop Drop on-pack—be sure to stop by a private craft focused liquor store.  If you miss this special on-pack don’t worry, Hop Drop will be made under the newly minted Phillips Fermentorium so stay tuned to find it year-round in private liquor stores.

legacy

new beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver:

Breakside Brewery – India Pale Ale – $7.85
You’ve all been asking for it, and it’s finally happened! Breakside beers have finally landed in our cooler. This Portland brew pours a beautiful transparent orange with a pile of citrus and citrus hops on the nose. More citrus in the form of grapefruit and orange accompanied with a bit of pine on a malt background represent the palate, while a medium body and dry finish close out this tasty Oregon treat.

Evan Doan | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store

Pyramid Brewing – Hefeweizen – $6.65

It’s time for some Hefeweizen, and these west coast gentlemen have produced a fine rendition of this cloudy and delicious beverage. A hazy pale lemon with wheat, grass, slight orange essence and floral hops can all be found on the nose, aromas that carry through on the palate with a touch of lemon tartness on the finish. Crisp and refreshing, it’s a fabulous Hefe for any thirsty individual.

Mike Dolan | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store

Townsite Brewing – Said the Ale – $7.55

Part of the CBC music radio craft beer collaboration, ‘Said the Ale’ is a Belgian pale ale from the folks in Powell River pouring dark copper in colour, with notes of dark fruit and yeast as well as herbal hops in its bouquet. Raisin and dark malt are the stars on the palate with herbal hops playing backup as a dry finish rounds out this delicious beer.

Triple-Beer-Super-Massive-Seasonal-Release!
October 22nd: We’re celebrating BC Craft Beer Month the best way we know how: with a triple-beer-super-massive-seasonal-release!

Three releases at once can be a lot to keep straight–especially once the craft connoisseur starts sampling. So to help you map your path we’ll be highlighting the beers on our website and social media channels over the next 3 days, offering background info and tasting notes for each one.

For all you Victoria-folk, we will also be hosting a tasting at the brewery on Tuesday October 23rd from 3pm-6pm where you can come on down to sample all three releases, meet some of the brewers and have an all-around great time.

But to get everyone’s engines revved up, here are some broad strokes…

Puzzler Black Belgian IPA – 9.1% 650mL – Crafted in collaboration with our friends at Great Lakes Brewing from Toronto, buckets of black malt give this beer a deep earthy-brown colour and a huge body. Generous portions of bittering hops add balance and tip the flavour profile definitively to the hoppy side of the scale, while Belgian yeast endows the collaborative brew with a slightly spicy undertone.

Eric Jourdan’s Northwest Amber Ale – 6.2% 650mL – Who says you need a brewery to make great beer? Eric Jourdan is one of the winners of CAMRA Victoria’s Home Brew Competition, and won the opportunity to come into Phillips and brew his creation in our brewhouse! His home brewed Northwest Amber Ale is a testament to brewing skill whether your brewhouse is in a brewery or a basement.

Green Reaper Fresh Hop IPA – 6.5% 650mL – Freshly harvested Willamette hops went from bine to beer in less than 24 hours in this newly minted Fresh Hop annual release. It’s a craft beer apparition sent to show you the impact that fresh hops can make as it guides your taste buds to the aftertaste.

**All of the releases are available at private craft-focused liquor stores, and only while supplies last!
