Hopworks “Organic” Ace of Spades Imperial IPA- $13.35

This hopped out beast has Amarillo, Cascade and Centennial hops added at every point – mash tun, first wort, kettle and dry hop – and all this green goodness results in a beer with a huge citrus hop aroma, flavour and deep clean bitterness.

Anderson Valley “Wild Turkey” Bourbon Barrel Stout- $12.85

Complexity. Aged for three months in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels, this luxurious stout has a deep ebony hue and a beautiful mahogany head. The woody, vanilla-like notes imparted by the barrels mingle with aromas of fresh baked bread, toffee and espresso, enveloping the rich chocolate and roasted barley flavours with a fine bourbon character.

Powell Street/Four Winds DunkelWeizen Collaboration – $7.55

When two breweries come together magic can happen, and this fun collaboration, with its taste of Cacao Nibs, is definitely worth seeking out. After turkey beer perhaps?

Joel Wilson | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store
Deep Cove “Sun Kissed” Tea Saison – $7.15

Think orchard fruits and sun soaked patios with a blanket as it’s fall. This playful beer will surprise you with a combination of fruit tones, peppery spice and a refreshingly dry tartness. Made with apple, mango and papaya infused Rooibos tea. Ummmmm Yum!!

Evan Doan | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store

Tofino “Cosmic Wave” Double IPA – $8.25

From your expanding mind to the cosmic center of the universe (Tofino) comes this Double IPA. Want to know what taking a bag of hops to the face while keeping balance feels like? Get this in your glass before it’s gone and find out. Delish!!

Birra Del Buttero Marsil – $10.65

Italian Gose…. Amazing!! This is incredible refreshing with a depth complexity that just astounds me. The mouse is straight out of Champagne with it’s class and elegance. This is a food brew with so many possibilities. With 4.2ABV this is very sessionable. What more can I say??? Awesome!

fun new beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver:

Moon Under Water Brewery This Is Hefeweizen – $7.05

From across the Strait of Georgia, Moon Under Water holds to the classic stylings of a Hefeweizen with this phenomenal seasonal brew. Pouring a hazy amber with a fluffy head and aromas of earth, wheat and cloves, this beer shows more cloves and bananas on the palate with citrus bringing up the rear. A classic beer taken to the next level.

Evan Doan | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store

Bridge Brewing Hopilano IPA – $7.55

One of our favourite Nano breweries from the North Shore is back for more with their distinctly Pacific Northwest Hopilano IPA in tow. This gem of an India Pale Ale pours a cloudy amber orange with a distinctly floral- and citrus fruit-anchored nose. The palate matches the bouquet, with the citrus eventually winding down into a tropical fruit finish.

Chris Bonnallie | Beer Supervisor | Legacy Liquor Store

Driftwood Brewery Gose-uh – $6.95

A popular beer style from Leipzig, Germany, this unique beer style has met with near extinction twice in its lifetime. Pulled back from the precipice of doom, it pours a hazy yellow with notes of coriander and sweet malt in its bouquet. On the palate coriander plays a large role, while an almost unperceivable tartness helps balance out the sweetness. A truly unique treat.

Joel Wilson | Beer Team | Legacy Liquor Store

Lighthouse Brewing – Anniversary Ale – $8.75

They grow up so fast! Happy 15th anniversary, Lighthouse, and here’s to many more! This robust brew has plenty to boast about, with loads of malt and hop (including but not limited to Maris Otter, Crystal and Chocolate malt, as well as Cluster and Fuggle hops) making for an exciting new beer with all the characteristics of a familiar friend.

Parallel 49 Brewing – Red Eye Red Rye Lager – $7.55

A partnership between the boys in our backyard, Parallel 49, and Eugene, Oregon’s favourite son, Ninkasi Brewing, has produced this dark brown brew with notes of fruit, graphite and earth. On the palate, earth, spice, hop and malt all come together to provide a pleasurable experience with a touch of bitterness to round it out. An excellent collaboration that should not be missed.

Tofino Brewing – Reign in Blonde – $6.65

Far, far away on the western shores of Vancouver Island you’ll find a brewery, and in that brewery you’ll find beer. An homage to Slayer, this Blonde pours a pale clear amber with a bouquet of grass, slight hop and malty sweetness, notes that make themselves known without affecting the light, crisp body forming the base of this brew.

i’m ba-ack!

i’m back from my amazing week in tofino

quickly:
i spent an awful lot of time at tofino brewing filling my growlers with hoppin’ cretin ipa and reign in blonde and tuff session
(and then drinking them)
on the way home we stopped overnight in victoria
we stayed at swans, drank at garrick’s head pub (10 new taps!!)
where i had lighthouse 15th anniversary amber ale, elysian men’s room red and driftwood fat tug

next morning we got growler fills at lighthouse (switchback) and driftwood (fat tug)
(such incredibly friendly staff at both places),
stopped in at spinnakers for a pint,
and came home in time for me to not be on cbc radio on tuesday
due to a mix-up it just didn’t happen
i apologize if you tuned in and were disappointed
i was most disappointed not to talk extreme beers
silver-lining, i have my topic all ready for september 3rd

tuesday evening i attended camra vancouver’s hops 101 class at steamworks
and got to try the brand spanking new parallel 49 crane kick pilsner (a refreshingly hoppy pilsner) and snap, crackle, hop imperial ipa (those new zealand hops sure pack a fruity punch) and loved them both
(note to self:  buy several bottles of each asap)
after which i went to the alibi room
where i was too late for the driftwood bird of prey
and did not get my name picked for one of the 40 zwanze day tickets
harumph!

last night i finally made it over to 33 acres to check out their tasting room
its a really beautiful space
and the beers are great too!
33 acres of ocean – hoppy pale ale
33 acres of life – california common
33 acres of sunshine – a french saison – this seasonal won’t last much longer, so if you haven’t had it yet, you’d better get on it
then to the cascade room for some gigantic high fidelity, a hoppy golden ale that packs quite a whallop of abv
i’m actually looking forward to a night off from beer tonight
my poor body needs a little rest and regeneration

tofino

that’s it, i’m off to tofino for a week!!
fun in the sun and sand!
and drinking lots of wonderful tofino brewing beers!
i have pre-blogged a few items, so it won’t be a total ghost-town around here for the week though!

if you missed me on cbc radio last week talking about gluten-free beers
you can still catch the show by following the link and clicking on august 6
i’m on at the end, so if you want to just hear me, fast forward to the last 10 minutes

i’ll be back on cbc radio on august 20th
this time talking about extreme beers
if you’re in the vancouver area, tune in to on the coast with stephen quinn at 5:50 p.m.

legacy and camra sessional

new beers at legacy liquor store in vancouver:

Moon Under Water Shatterbier Golden Ale – $12.55This collaboration between reinvigorated Moon Under Water Brewery and Shatterbox Coffee is one that should not be missed. Pouring a hazy golden colour with candied fruit, citrus and coffee found in the aromatics, this brew has marzipan and roasted coffee on the palate and a dry finish to round it out.

St. Feuillien Saison – $10.45
Described as a beer of terroir, this Belgian Saison is a traditional farmhouse from St. Feuillien pouring pale amber with aromas of candied citrus and melon. In the mouth, orange, black pepper and yeast make this a Saison worth drinking.

Tofino Brewing Dawn Patrol Coffee Porter – $7.15
A new coffee porter from the west coast of Vancouver Island that pours a velvety dark brown similar to a black cup of coffee. Rich coffee aromas own the bouquet of this beer, while espresso beans and light malt are found on the palate. A tasty coffee porter from Tofino Brewing.

camra vancouver’s spring sessional at the portside pub is sold out!
me, i’ll be pouring the nectar of the gods on the late shift
so if you’re there and its after 3:00, come by and say hi!

legacy liquor store

friday afternoon (4:00 – 7:00) at legacy liquor store in vancouver, a free tasting of american brewing’s breakaway ipa and blonde beers – i’ll be there!

new and exciting beers available at legacy:

Moon Under Water Potts Pils Unfiltered – $6.95

New owners, new brewmaster, new beer, new brewery. First on the docket, Potts Pils, an unfiltered hop-conscious beer brewed in the style of a northern German pilsner. Grab it while it lasts.

Epic Hop Zombie – $10.35

Coming all the way from Auckland, New Zealand, Hop Zombie is a Double IPA with punch. Zesty citrus and tropical fruits on the nose and more of the same with a touch of malt on the palate. Pick up a bottle and put a little Kiwi in you.

Epic Epicurean Coffee & Fig – $22.55

Another brew from the boys at Epic inspired by all the creatives out there: dark chocolate, molasses and fig account for the nose, with black liquorice, coffee, fig, vanilla and so much more making up the palate. These guys know what they’re doing.

Tofino Brewing Company Tuff Session Ale – $7.05
Afraid to brave that mountain pass? Don’t worry, we’ll bring Tofino to you. This Tuff Session Ale is copper in colour, with notes of caramel and nuts on the nose. A malty flavour with subdued bitterness creates a truly sessional ale.
Oude Gueze Tilquin a l’Ancienne – $18.85
Created by blending together one, two and three-year-old oak-aged lambics, this gueze boasts barnyard funk, citrus and green apple on the nose with a sour, dry finish.
Powell Street Hopdemonium IPA – $8.85
A new brewery on the scene and a new beer to enjoy. Heavy pine and floral notes backed up with some citrus on the nose, with bitter and earthy hops to taste. An absolute jewel of an IPA.

alibi room

oh alibi room!
why do you have so many more beers than i can drink in a night?

i began with a cask last night
central city’s red racer dry-hopped with simcoe
and it was fantastic
could have been a little more carbonated
but otherwise a stellar ipa!

next up i decided to double my hops pleasure
with the lost coast limited release double trouble ipa
and holy hops batman, was it ever a citrusy bitter little number
delicious!

why i didn’t just have small pours of the above two, i don’t know
but there were still too many beers i wanted to try on the menu that i had to go with a frat bat!

from left to right:
conrad’s marris otter cascade hopped session ale
tofino hop cretin ipa
tariq’s wrath of khan ipa
red truck cherry lemonade cask

loved the first three, did not at all care for the cherry lemonade
at 3.8% i can see drinking the session ale on a summer patio for hours!
and the other two?  gosh darnit, i love me an ipa
colour me happy!

tacofino commissary

so many craft beer serving establishments opening in vancouver this summer!
and being the galivanting around town type that i am, i have tried to hit them all
well, okay the ones i get told about anyway
last thursday was opening night for tacofino commissary
an actual restaurant to go with the two food trucks they already have in town
its a delightful space on hastings street, just west of nanaimo street
a long narrow room with communal long tables
and an incredible light fixture of glowing white balls connected by copper wiring…
with live plants growing out of it
Bocci Lights made by Omer Arbel!

tacofino was my third stop on thursday night, so i wasn’t hungry
i did get to try a bite of my friend’s banana churros though – savoury banana churro coated in sugar, served with banana sriracha ice cream
deeelicious!

the rest of the menu looks delightful
featuring such gems as cauliflower with serrano chiles, turmeric, crispy rice and spicy fish sauce
poke tostada with albacore tuna, soy, sesame, wakame and beer hazelnuts
tamale with spot prawns, crispy masa, lardons and slow-cooked egg
and of course the fish taco that made the orange food truck so popular
as for libations, they have them a-plenty!
bubbles, red wine, white wine, rose, sake and plum wine
cocktails and beer
draft beer in 12 oz jam jars, 32oz growlitas or 64 oz growlers:
tofino reign in blond ale, tofino tuff session ale, driftwood white bark and parallel 49 india pale lager
bottles:  pacifico, creemore springs lager and red seal pale ale
yes, you read that right, they serve beer in growlers and half sized growlers
makes a pitcher seem kinda sad in comparison doesn’t it?
i ordered the parallel 49 ipl
and it went quite well with the almost overwhelming heat of the restaurant
hopefully they find a way to get air circulating in there!
the heat and the not amazing bathroom are my only negatives
everything else was fabulous
i really liked the order markers they have – shaved wooden blocks with stencilled numbers
you get one when you order and it stays with you for your whole dining experience
enabling any server to fetch you sustenance while putting it on the correct bill – genius!
go there!
support local small business
especially ones who are supporting bc’s craft brewers!
open for dinner service from 5:00 – 10:00pm, and open for drinks till late
