Founded in 2002 by Gunnar Wiig and Kjetil Jikiun with one mission, to create fantastic full-bodied handcrafted beer. The name Nøgne Ø, which means “Naked Island,” is a poetic term used by Henrik Ibsen to describe the countless stone outcroppings that are visible off Norway’s southern coast. It also paints a symbolic picture of what two Norwegian homebrewers set out to do in 2002 in a country flooded with macrobeers. Uncompromising in their methods, Nøgne Ø creates gold from gold using malts and hops such as Maris Otter, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Columbus. Quality ingredients for quality craft beers, it’s as simple as that. Since their founding, Nøgne Ø has grown from a 300 hl production to an estimated 3500 hl with more than 20 different styles brewed regularly. This Grimstad, Norway-based brewery is a testament to what two bold homebrewers can accomplish with a quality craft brew.

Nøgne Ø Imperial Rye Porter – $14.45
A collaborative brew for the rainy weather courtesy of Terrapin Beer Co. and Nøgne Ø. Pitch black when it hits the glass, roasted barley and malt hit immediately followed by sweet caramel and spicy rye. Plenty of chocolate, coffee and spice can all be found working together in perfect harmony. This particular brew hides it’s 9% ABV well, so be wary, but enjoy it regardless.

Nøgne Ø Sunturnbrew – $11.75
Brewed during the solstice of every year since 2008, this bold smoked barley wine is a unique little beer. Crimson in colour with a big smoky nose, think peated scotch with a complex palate of rich malts, burnt sugar, dried fruits, subtle hops and of course peaty smoke. Big, rich and delicious, sign me up.

Nøgne Ø Tiger Tripel – $10.65
From the cold shores of Norway, Nøgne Ø delivers a Tripel with a bit of Scottish inspiration. Golden brown in colour with rich ripe notes of stone fruit (peach and apricot) and a blend of spices such as nutmeg, pepper and anise on the nose. More stone fruit presents itself on the palate with even more spices like cinnamon, clove and a bit of paprika. Deceptively drinkable and just plain delicious, I say well played, Nøgne Ø.

Nomadic Brewers Javier Aldea and Sami Claret of Nomada Brewing Co. hail from a burgeoning craft beer scene across the Atlantic Ocean in Spain. Designing, creating and brewing exclusive beers at any brewery that will let them make beer has pushed them to the forefront of a Spanish craft beer revolution. Utilizing hops and malts commonly found in the Pacific Northwest (think Centennial, Cascade, Columbus, etc.) this young upstart brewery has managed to capture a sense of terroir by introducing the climate and soil of Spain into the growth cycle of PNW ingredients. The result, a selection of carefully crafted beers that have found themselves at the front of the pack, but you’ll just have to sample some of these brews to decide for yourself. Salud!

Nomada Brewing Co. Papaya Crash Imperial IPA – $8.55

Hazy and dark orange in colour, this imperial IPA with papaya pops right out of the Spieglau IPA glass with notes of fruity papaya and earthy hops. Grapefruit pith, pine resin and caramel malt work well with one another and strike a near perfect balance, finishing slightly dry with the hops, malt and a bit of alcohol rounding out this impressive Spanish brew.

Nomada Brewing Co. Royal Porter a la Taza – $7.05

A rich dark brown in colour with plenty of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate and coffee backing it up. As it warms up, this little devil gets more complex, but you can expect coffee beans, roasted malt and chocolate flavours right out of the gate. Extremely quaffable thanks to a very well hidden ABV and an exceptional flavour profile, this brew is not to be missed.

Driftwood Old Cellar Dweller – $13.55

It’s that time of year again; when big robust beers full of character brave the winter cold to warm us up from head to toe. Mahogany and ruby in colour, this particular barleywine has a huge nose of molasses, burnt sugar, dark chocolate, tobacco and a warming alcohol. All of these aromas translate beautifully in the mouth with an absurd smoothness at this ABV (11.6%) accompanied by earthy hop, more burnt sugar and molasses. This quality brew is good for now or for sometime down the road.

Moon Under Water Wedding Beer – $12.55

There’s something special about single batch beers, maybe it’s the once in a lifetime chance to get to try it, or maybe its how create the beer is. Either way Moon Under Water hit this one clear out of the park. This golden coloured Belgian Triple is spicy and sweet on the nose with all sorts of fruits. Honey, yeast, fruit and spice all contribute to the effervescent palate of the beer. Delicious and dangerously quaffable at its ABV, you’d better snag a bottle before this wedding wraps.

seattle

i had a lovely weekend in seattle
a weekend is never long enough
so there wasn’t a whole lot of beer tourism on my part
but i got in as much as i could!

saturday:
pike brewing:
i was looking for breakfast at 11:00
but they just have a lunch and dinner menu
so i made do with a pretzel and xxxxx stout mustard, with a cup of their crab chowder
which were quite delightful – yay oyster crackers!
(deschutes’ pretzel is better though…)

i started with the seasonal space needle ipa
pike beat out the competition to win the rights to brew the beer for the space needle’s 50th anniversary
dry-hopped to heck, it features centennial, cascade, columbus, chinook and summit

shockingly enough for seattle the sun disappeared and it started to torentially downpour
what else to do but stay and have a few more beers??

next up, the imperial ipa
which at 8% is served in a 12oz pour

the space needle ipa is supposed to be golden, but i didn’t really see a colour difference between it and the imperial ipa
both are hop monsters, the space needle coming out a little more floral and the imperial a little more citrusy

i then went backwards and had the regular ipa
i would love to tell you more about it
but frankly i was feeling my beers by that point and had kinda wrecked my palate
so let’s just go with i was a happy camper!

meanwhile, back at the ranch, jack was drinking a gluten-free beer
poor sucker…
it was a tripel, so i just had me a little sip
you know what?  it wasn’t half bad – for a belgian!

pike brewing is not somewhere i would suggest going if you’re prone to headaches
there is just so much going on there
every surface is covered in beer-related paraphenalia
and it can get quite loud when its busy
(not to mention annoying children kicking their table legs…)

the decor all keeps to their red and black colour theme
so it is pleasing to the eye rather than a mish-mash
and gives you lots to look at/think about

i spent a lovely couple of hours at pike brewing
until the sun came back out and i moved on to other activities
which involved red hook ipa, boundary bay ipa and ninkasi total domination

happy new year…

or happy apocalypse?!

elysian brings us the 12 beers of the apocalypse
beginning with these two brews:

In a year-long run-up to the end of all time (according to the Mayan calendar), Elysian Brewing Company and Fantagraphics Books, both of Seattle, are planning a series of twelve beers, issued on the 21st of each month in 2012 and featuring the label artwork of Charles Burns. Taken from Burns’s weirdly apocalyptic work “Black Hole,” the labels will adorn Elysian’s “Twelve Beers of the Apocalypse,” featuring the creativity and unusual ingredients for which its brewing team is known. What twelve beers would you brew (and drink) if you knew they would be your last?

First up in January is NIBIRU, named for the mysterious planet X supposedly on a collision course toward Earth. The Elysian / Fantagraphics Nibiru will be a Belgian-style Tripel flavored with an infusion of yerba maté. Combining the tasty esters of Belgian yeast and the compelling tea-like flavors of the South American herb mixture, the beer will weigh in at around 7.6% alcohol by volume. A mixture of German Northern Brewer, Czech Saaz and American Amarillo hops round out the uniqueness of this first beer of the Apocalypse. Oddly enough there’s another apocalyptic-themed Nibiru out there: a super volcano currently burbling most dangerously beneath Yellowstone National Park. It too is scheduled to end life as we know it very very soon.

February 21 will usher in RAPTURE, an ale of opulent proportions flavored with heather tips. Unlike the various Rapture events predicted by pseudoscientists and alarmist evangelicals, the beer will be very real and frankly delicious, combining the floral fragrance and slight bite of high country heather with Northwest Glacier hops in another 7% abv beer. FALLOUT follows in March, right around the time of the vernal equinox. Fallout will be a pale ale made with green cardamom.

As Earth’s last year unfolds, other beers will appear as if by dangerous magic. Persimmons, chilies, raisins, blood oranges, rosemary and other herbs will be integrated into ales, lagers and Belgian styles using the finest local and imported ingredients. These limited brews will be available in bottles and draft and at select bars and bottle shops.

We will celebrate as they are released – on the 21st of every month in 2012 – with events at one or the other of Elysian’s three Seattle pubs and at Fantagraphics headquarters in the Georgetown neighborhood. Once they’re gone, these beers will never be brewed again. Then again, come December 21, that will be the least of our worries.

REMEMBER: THE END IS BEER.
